ECSA Western Precinct

HDM Engineering was part of the consortium responsible for the design and construction of the new ACSA Headquarters, a AAA-grade office building comprising three multi-story blocks connected by a basement parking facility. In this project, HDM partnered with WSP International as the consulting engineers for mechanical services, civil, and structural engineering, with WSP leading the initiative. Our role involved the design, supervision, and commissioning of HVAC systems that achieved a Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). Additionally, we managed the civil and structural engineering aspects, including site measurements, structural detailing, and civil engineering services.

Moedwil Combined School

This project involved the refurbishment of both the primary and high school, including boys’ and girls’ hostels. HDM Engineering was appointed by the Independent Development Trust (IDT), acting on behalf of the Department of Education in the North West Province, to provide consulting engineering services for electrical and mechanical systems. The project is being executed in three phases across different financial years, with a contractor appointed for each phase.

UISP Project – Princess Informal Settlement & Tshepisong Informal Settlement

Commissioned by the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSCHO) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, HDM Engineering was appointed as the project management company for the implementation of Phase 2 of the UISP (Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme), in accordance with Section 3(4)(g) of the Housing Act, 1997 (Act No.107 of 1997), also known as the National Housing Programme. Our scope of services included project management, town planning, social facilitation, engineering services, environmental assessments, land surveying, and pegging of stands. This includes the managing the interim services (Electrical, water ) installations and reblocking at Princess informal settlement.

Bank of Lisbon Demolition

The Bank of Lisbon, a historical building located in Johannesburg’s CBD, was condemned due to structural integrity issues following a devastating fire in 2018 that resulted in several fatalities. The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure appointed HDM Engineering to provide health and safety services and oversee the safe demolition of the 18-story building. Given its heritage status and central location, the demolition required a carefully coordinated implosion process to avoid impacting surrounding buildings. This project was the first of its kind on the continent, and through meticulous planning and collaboration with all stakeholders, the building was successfully imploded on November 25, 2019, with no major incidents reported. We are proud to have contributed to this landmark event, broadcast live on national television.
